In May 2005 the first African Gender Forum took place at Dakar, Senegal. It was organised by FAS, in conjunction with the Arab International Women's Forum, in anticipation of the formal launch of the Gender is my Agenda Campaign, and brought together over 200 delegates from 32 countries.

The 1st recipients of the African Gender Award, Presidents Wade of Senegal, and Mbeki of South Africa, were also honoured at the inaugural ceremony, which took place after the Conference.
